7A4 (Local vs. General Notes)

7A4.2.

Two issues noted, with no precedence determined. In the first, the word "Washington" on the engraved title page is unadorned and the plates are hand-colored. In the second, the word "Washington" on the title page is surrounded by scrollwork and the plates are uncolored

Bib: http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b16919154~S1

Status: Used 6/22/14

Two binding variants noted, one in red cloth and one in blue cloth

Status: Used 2/18/13

MT: From DCRM(B) 7B10.5 but not specific to books so kept as is. 2/118/13

One of two nearly identical editions. Left column of statistical data begins with California (at head: vignette of Oregon); right column begins with Maine (at head: vignette of California). Printed on a larger sheet with 15-20 mm of unprinted margins between the outer edges of the ornamental border and the edges of the sheet. Typeface height of "United States" in title measures 7 mm.

Bib: http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b17675104~S1

Image: http://content.cdlib.org/ark:/13030/hb9779p3cq/

RB: Cf. http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b16219544~S1 for the other edition.

RB: Also suggest that first existing example, about the binding variants, is OK as is. Could very well be applied to cartographic materials. MT: Agree

Status: Used 4/20/13

RB: Does the above example fit the rule? Or do I need to keep looking?
MT: I think it fits. 4/20/13

MT: Deleted; didn't think it fit so well after all. 5/11/14

7A5.1 Order of information

Revision of: 3rd ed. London : Macmillan, 1953

Status: Used

MT: The DCRM(B) example seems like it would work here, so I just deleted the "need C example" label. 5/18/13

7A5.2 Quotations

"The letters E, F, S, D, Da, annexed to the names of the islands, denote them to belong either to the English, French, Spanish, Dutch, or Danes, &c."

Status: Used 3/10/13

"This map is based on the Steven Avery Powder-horn Map 1777, the Caleb Harris Survey 1795, the Daniel Anthony Map 1805, Henry R. Chace's 'Owners and Occupants' 1798 and on Documents owned by the R.I. Historical Society. S.R.B."

"The version is that of Jacobus Angelus, edited and remodeled by Bernardus Sylvanus"--Sabin

(Comment: A separate note is used to provide a full citation for the reference to the published description in J. Sabin's Bibliotheca americana)

http://josiah.brown.edu/record=b4608636~S7

Status: Used 6/3/12; revised 12/2/12 to remove Sabin number and add comment.

"Probably the first publication to be printed on American machine-made paper"--Hunter, D. Papermaking history and technique, p. 351

Bib: http://catalog.nypl.org/record=b12070681~S1

Status: Used 12/2/12

MT: I have this vague idea that if the quotation is not from a bibliography as such, we don't need to make a formal 510 note for it. So, I just put the Hunter info in the same note rather than following the pattern for Sabin above. If others think it should go in a 510, I can delete all after "Hunter" and add a comment. 12/2/12

MT: Taken from DCRM(B)

7A6.2. Other works

Abridgement of: Atlas Marianus / Wilhelm Gumppenberg. 1657-1659

Status: Used 6/3/12

MT: Example from CM (note: in chapter draft, author's name is missing final "g"). We should probably have 2 versions of the citation, as in DCRM(B), but we need to see a bib record and/ or image of the item to provide the transcribed statement of responsibility. 11/20/11

MT: I'm still unable to find an image to verify the transcription, but I found two bib records and they match so I used that. 6/3/12

Sketch map in the author's hand, signed

Status: Used 5/18/14

MT: This is a made-up example. 5/18/14

Signed by surveyor and chief engineer
Source: CM

MT: This example seems odd to me. It is illustrating the instruction to always note if a manuscript is signed. Wouldn't you just transcribe this in the statement of responsibility? Or, if it is an atlas and the names appear elsewhere than the title page, wouldn't you say where they appear (and include in the note what the names were)?  4/2/13

Added engraved t.p. reads: A new systeme of geography : reduced to a plain & easy method

Bib

Image

Status: Used 2/18/13

TF: I'm not sure if we need to include the other title info or remove the colon and make it all one title. The title from the t.p. reads: A new system of geography designed in a most plain and easie method. 1/26/12

MT: The added engraved t.p. actually has additional other title info and a statement of responsibility. I think I'll give the complete title info in the note but change the beginning of the note to "Title on added engraved t.p." (because to me "Engraved t.p. reads" might suggest that we're noting all the text on the page, not just the title). Also, I think I'll just use the punctuation that is on the source. 2/18/13

Status: Used 2/23/13; updated. 3/28/13

MT: It would be nice to be able to cite a print bibliography for this. The 3rd link above seems to suggest that M.P. Synder's "City Of Independence, Views Of Philadelphia Before 1800" might have something... 2/23/13

TF: The citation (which states Dury (who was responsible for publishing the map) omitted any credit to Nicolas Scull and gave it instead to Benjamin Easburn):

Cf. Snyder, M.P.  City of independence, p. 96-97
MT: Thanks! I added the reference. 3/28/13
MT: In case we need it (doubtful), just a note that I looked at the Snyder work. He provides textual explanation on p. 96 for this and several related maps, then lists the bibliographic entries themselves on p. 97; our map is entry 44.

7B7.1.

[Atlas]

Edition statement from cover.

Bib

Image (t.p.)

Image (cover)

Status: Used 2/18/13

[Another atlas example]

Edition statement from added engraved t.p.

Bib

Image (engraved t.p.)

Image (letterpress t.p.)

Status: Used 3/28/13

TF: This is an interesting atlas; the t.p. is from the 1635 edition; there is an added engraved t.p. for 1637 with the "Second edytion" statement and date of 1637. Should the note then read "Publication date and edition statement from added engraved t.p."?

MT: This situation seems really close to the one described in 0C2.1 except it is an engraved t.p. not a cover :

... if the atlas bears a cover issued by the publisher, and the cover contains all the elements typically given on a title page but with more recent information than that provided on the title page (e.g., a later edition statement and publication date), choose the cover as the chief source of information. Make a note to indicate that the cover has been chosen as the chief source of information (see 7B3.1).

But 0C2.2 clearly says to prefer a letterpress t.p. over an engraved t.p. as the chief source. Hmm. LC seems to be using the engraved t.p. as the chief source: http://lccn.loc.gov/2008626506

Leaving that whole question aside, I think it's fine to use "Edition statement from added engraved t.p." as an example here. The note doesn't have to be exactly what we'd use in the bib record itself. It doesn't even have to be a real-life example as long as it is a plausible one. It just has to illustrate the rule. It's not like finding an example in which transcription is involved. 3/28/13

[This example is illustrating the final sentence in 7B7.1. "Note original position of any element that is transposed ..."]

Map of Mexico & California, 1863

Note: Edition statement precedes publication date in imprint.

Bib. record: http://orbexpress.library.yale.edu/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=4899994

Image

Status: Used 9/1/12

MT: This note sounded strange to me at first glance because it is typical for an edition statement to precede an imprint. It wasn't until I looked at the image that I fully understood. Would it be clearer to say "Edition statement appears between the place and date of publication in the imprint"?

MT: The map says: Map of Mexico & California compiled from the latest authorities by Juls. Hutawa Lithr. Second St. 45 St. Louis, Mo. 2nd edition 1863.

It needn't affect our ability to use this example, I'm just curious how others would transcribe this. I could see two different ways of doing it, depending on whether you thought the info in the s.o.r. was separable or not.

One way:

Map of Mexico & California / compiled from the latest authorities by Juls. Hutawa, lithr. -- 2nd edition. -- St. Louis, Mo. : [Julius Hutawa] Second St. 45, 1863.
Note: On the map, the edition statement appears between the place and date of publication in the imprint; the street address appears before city name.

TF: I like this phrasing better than mine.
MT: Okay, I used this phrasing (but omitted the part about the street address and city, since we're only looking for an example about the edition statement in 7B7.1). 9/1/12

Another way:

Map of Mexico & California / compiled from the latest authorities by Juls. Hutawa, lithr., Second St. 45, St. Louis, Mo. -- 2nd edition. -- [St. Louis, Mo. : Julius Hutawa], 1863.

TF: I like your second choice, as it doesn't separate the lithographer from the address, which in a sense, are

inseparable (not grammatically so much as contextually).

Map of the United States and their territories between the Mississippi and the Pacific Ocean, and of part of Mexico [1851?]

MT: I don't think this is an example of edition and bibliographic history. It would seem to belong more in 4D2.4 (Fictitious or incorrect dates) or 7B9 (Publication). The bib record's transcription of the imprint seems iffy. I don't see "The Corps" on the piece anywhere. And wouldn't you put the 1850 date that appears on the map in the 260 field and then add the corrected date? Like this:

[Washington, D.C.: Corps of Topographical Engineers], 1850 [i.e. 1851?] (New-York : Engraved by Sherman and Smith)

If not, where would you put it? Also, we currently say in 1E that engravers go in the statement of responsibility. Does that mean the "Sherman and Smith" statement should go in the s.o.r. instead of the imprint? If not, then we probably need to say something in the rules about this. 8/25/12

TF: This is a good question, as it seems very odd to put the engraved statement in the s.o.r. (at least for this example). Maybe we ought to revisit including engraver as part of 1E.

MT: I see the bib record now has been revised. I added the Wheat quote as an example in 7B9.1. 3/28/13

State 5 (after 1645) with newly engraved sea around embellishments, especially in area found within 10⁰ and 20⁰ S, 240⁰ and 250⁰ longitude, showing many horizontal lines lacking any waves; see Burden, P.D.  Mapping of North America, 189.

[TF: This phrasing it taken directly from Burden.]

Status:

MT: We already have two other "state" examples. What we need are C examples that are similar to the the remaining B examples so we can have a variety of different types of notes (e.g. "Revision of: xxx", "Sequel to: xxx" (possibly not relevant??), "Previous ed.: xxx", "Detailed description of plates in: xxx". 10/28/12

MT: Also, I'm not sure this "state" example would justify making a new record; it might be an example where different states are identified using local notes. What do others think? Does Appendix E need further refinement to make it clearer what kinds of changes to plates are significant enough to justify a new record? In this case, I don't think anything in areas 1-6 of the description would be affected by the additional "sea" engravings. 10/28/12

RB: Not sure if I've got this note right. When looked at side-by-side, these are clearly the same map. But there are several differences, in addition to new title and imprint: prime meridians, neat lines, lat. and long. lines (making for slightly different scale), etc. Apparently Patten had a habit of doing this kind of thing. He's referenced in a copyright infringement case from 1828 (thank you, Google Books!) for republishing someone else's nautical chart as his own.

Longitude coordinates given inaccurately on map as W 114°--W 136°

Bib record

Image

Status: Used 6/29/14

MT: Todd, I'm just curious, how do you know the real coordinates? And how did you find the example? Anyone have any idea why the longitude coordinates on the bottom of the map, which purport to be W from Greenwich, are getting higher as you move W to E? It seems like an odd error to make. 4/22/14

TF: I approximated using Google Earth, although I probably should have merely reversed the coordinates given incorrectly on the map; thus, W 136°--W 114°. I think the map maker made a mistake and just reversed the coordinates from Greenwich (the coordinates from Washington at top are correct). Would this still qualify as an inaccurate (or better yet, distorted) coordinates or merely a mistake? 4/23/14

TF:Do we really need an example for the fourth paragraph of 7B8.3., "Make a note to indicate that coordinates have been approximated by comparison ..."? Wouldn't you expect the note to read nearly the same as the rule?

Coordinates not given and have been approximated.

MT: I would find an example helpful, even if the wording were very similar to the rule. The example we have in 3D2.8 is "Coordinates not present on map; approximated by comparison with another map". We could just repeat that example in area 7 but it would be better if there other types of comparisons that we could show or slightly different wording that we could use. Something like "Coordinates not given on map; approximated based on comparison with similar maps from the same time period" - I'm just making this up as I've never actually done this before and I can't find any examples using OPAC searches. Todd's wording above does not mention comparison at all, so I'm hesitant to use it. 10/27/12

TF: I'm not entirely sure how one would approximate coordinates by comparison with another map. Nancy, any experience or advice on this?

TF: How would one formulate a note for coordinates determined by using Google Earth (which is basically the ONLY way I approximate coordinates)? See the example below (feel free to offer alternatives as to how to phrase the note). 5/16/13

MT: I really don't know the answer to this one. 5/19/13

Finding one not already described in some source may be. Should we provide an example even if it's already been described someplace?

Status: Used 2/18/13

MT: Provided formal contents note from t.p. after first paragraph. Provided formal contents note from individual maps after 2nd paragraph. In the first note, I couldn't bring myself to transcribe ".... Mercator's" as "-- Mercator's" because it looked too weird with all the other dashes in the contents note. I just ignored it. With: Warner & Beers. An illustrated historical atlas of St. Clair Co., Illinois. Chicago : Warner & Beers, 1874.

Image: none found

Status:

Note: not sure if this quite qualifies, because it's part of a reprint (so how should the date and pub info really be done?), and the original is not a "with" situation. NK 8/27/14

MT: Yeah, I think we'd need to use the imprint for the reprint. I'll see if I can find something older. 8/30/14

With (on recto): Bethea, P.Y. Map of Marion County, South Carolina / original survey made by Harllee about 1815 ; enlarged and improved May 1882 by P.Y. Bethea. [South Carolina?] : [P.Y. Bethea], [1882]

Status: Used 8/30/14

MT: I hope this does the trick. 8/30/14

7B19.3. ("bound with")

Bancroft Library copy: Mounted on kraft paper with 2 maps mounted on verso: Arnold, T.J. Map of part of plot 6, Kellersbergers survey of Vicente & Domingo Peralta Rancho ... S.F. [i.e. San Francisco] : Britton, Rey & Co., lith., [1876] -- Map of the Fifty Associates Tract ... [Oakland, Calif.? : s.n., 187-?]

Status:

RB: This rule (and other local notes rules) are still very book-centric. Do they need to be revised to include sheet maps? 5/12/13

MT: Good question. I guess we'd need to decide whether expand the whole "Bindings" section to also cover mountings, containers, etc. or to keep Bindings as its own section and add a new section on Mountings, etc. 5/13/13

TF: I don't know instances for single-sheet maps where a binding note might apply. The only circumstance I could think of is a map in a cover, which most likely would not be a local note (and anyway we have rules on covers in Area 5). Although 7B20.3 is a bit book-centric, I can see these rules applying to bound atlases. 4/22/14

MT: I added this as example of local note under 7B11.5 (section on mountings) for now but am still pondering the larger question of how to indicate local "with-ness" in cases that do not involve bindings. I think the bound-with rule probably should be taken out of Bindings, incorporated into the "With" notes section, and expanded to include other forms of "with-ness" such as mountings. 7/5/14   Follow-up: Made rule change, still need to move this example back from 7B11.5. 7/5/14

Library copy bound with: Kiepert, H. Supplementheft zum Atlas von Hellas und den hellenischen Colonien. Berlin : Verlag der Nicolaischen Buchhandlung, 1851

Bib: http://hdl.handle.net/10079/bibid/2511747

Status: Used 7/5/14

MT: This is an example of an atlas bound with a separately issued supplement. 7/5/14

7B19.4

Special Collections copy: No. 4 of 20 maps bound together in a composite atlas with binder's title: American atlas

Status: Used 7/5/14

MT: This is a made-up example. It is based on the following atlas but I decided to normalize the spelling of the binder's title because I didn't want an interpolated [sic] or [i.e. American] to distract from the main point of the rule: http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/dse/atlas/

7B20. Provenance

Underneath the base is engraved an inscription dated 1794, added by the first owner, John Smith of Cheapside

Bib: http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/498344126
Status:
MT: This was suggested by Larry in his globes document, adapted from the OCLC record (by adding a fake owner's name). But the way the provenance examples are set up we need two versions of each example, one a brief "summary" note, the other a detailed transcription. 8/13/12

Bancroft Library copy: Annotated to show routes traveled by S.C. Evans on his 1888 visit to the Hawaiian Islands

Bib: http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b18603159~S60

Status:
MT: Ditto above. 5/13/13

Bancroft Library copy: Armorial bookplate of Rev. Nathaniel S. Thomas (shelfmark: no. 6395)

Bib: http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b10641316~S60

Status:
MT: Ditto above. 5/13/13

Bancroft Library copy: Ownership signature and annotations of T.J. Cobden-Sanderson

Bib: http://oskicat.berkeley.edu/record=b18347543~S6

Status:
MT: All of these are perfectly good examples but, as I mentioned above: If we are going to follow DCRM(B)'s lead here, we need two versions of each provenance example; after the first paragraph goes a "short form" of the example. After the 2nd paragraph, a longer form. This is intended to show the different levels of detail that are possible for representing the same data. Do we want to ditch this approach and not use "pairs" of examples? 5/13/13

TF: I think we can find good examples for the short and long forms (see below).4/22/14

Short: Beinecke Library copy with inscription of Cyrus Woodman dated 1871.

Long: Beinecke Library copy with inscription "Yale College, from Cyrus Woodman, Cambridge, Mass., September 26, 1871."

Status: Used 4/27/14

MT: For added detail, I added "on verso" at the end of the long version; let me know if you want to substitute the real location, whatever that is. 4/27/14

Short: Newberry Library copy: Manuscript annotations, dated 1860, show course of a journey from England to Manitoba and back

Long: Newberry Library copy: Manuscript annotations in pen and ink show course of a journey from England to Norway House, Manitoba, and back (with a side trip to a Northwest Fur Company post in Minnesota, possibly at Lake Pokegama). The outward voyage is labeled "To New York, course of Great Eastern on her 1st voyage June 1860" and continues via the Erie Canal and the Great Lakes. The return voyage, via the St. Lawrence River, is labeled "Homeward bound in Bohemian for Liverpool"
