2B2.2 [phrase such as “newly printed”]

RB: I suggest that 2B2.2 does not need a C example. I have searched several times for an edition statement with "newly printed" or something similar, to no avail. 5/4/13

MT: Rather than having no example at all, I doctored the DCRM(B) example to stop after "Newly imprinted" (deleting "and very necessary vnto all youthe"). I left the comment as is. Hope this seems reasonable to everyone. 2/23/14

TF: The bib record has a note about the edition statement taken from the cover. Although this example is for recording a "printing" number (29th thousand) and is not an example of an edition statement, the map belongs to another library in the Yale system, and thus, I cannot change their bib record.

MT: Rumsey calls this the 2nd ed. (and on his page for the 1st ed. he talks about some of the differences between them). Can you cite Rumsey? Maybe citing a printed bibliography would be better. The references listed in the Rumsey page are: P1347; Sabin 47432; Ristow p180 (in case anyone has easy access to these). 4/20/13

MT: I guess we don't need this anymore but keeping it here in case we do need it and someone can check the reference. 5/18/13

Note: Described in: The mapping of the world / Rodney W. Shirley. London : Holland Press, 1983. No. 255, state 4.

Status: Used 5/18/13

MT: It's not clear to me if this example belongs in the main rule or the alternative rule. Because it involves a state rather than an edition, I'm thinking it should be the alternative?  5/18/13

MT: No, this is where the differing definitions of "state" (book vs. map) can be confusing. I see that LC has State 2 <http://lccn.loc.gov/87690702> and separate bib records are definitely called for because the s.o.r. and 260 field differ substantially. I made the example read:

Note: "State 4"--Shirley

(Comment: A separate note is used to provide a full citation for the reference to the published description in R.W. Shirley's The mapping of the world)

Note: First state, based on plate mark that runs off top of page--Burden.

Bib record: http://hdl.handle.net/10079/bibid/3936369

Status: Used 5/18/13

MT: It's not clear to me if this example belongs in the main rule or the alternative rule. Because it involves a state rather than an edition, I'm thinking it should be the alternative? Also, it seems strange to describe a map as being on a "page" - should it be "sheet" instead? 5/18/13

MT: This site uses "sheet" so I think I will too: http://www.bostonraremaps.com/catalogues/BRM0948.HTM

MT: I found an image of the 2nd state here: https://www.raremaps.com/gallery/detail/32484/Tierra_Nueva_New_England/Ruscelli.html

It looks like there is no substantial difference between them other than the plate mark, so according to App. E we would use a single bib record by default (and the note would be a LOCAL note). However, this means we can use this example to illustrate the alternative rule. I've done it as follows. 5/18/13:

[State 1]

Note: The first state, with the plate mark extending off the top of the sheet; see Burden

(Comment: A separate note is used to provide a full citation for the reference to the published description in P.D. Burden's The mapping of North America)

Status:

RB: I know we don't need another example here, but this one seems to fit the bill. Ignore, if you want.

MT: I don't think it does fit. "A new edition" in this case seems to refer to the publication being cataloged. The "School and college atlas of ancient geography" is what refers to the previous edition. 2/18/13

MT: I just used the DCRM(B) example. 5/18/13

MT: Does this example work? Or is the edition statement separable? I don't trust my rudimentary Latin. I appreciate that people are finding examples in bib records (both here and the example above) but the Latin skills of the person who created these bib records might be as bad as mine, so I'd prefer it if someone who definitely knows their Latin could sign off on these. 11/11/13

MT: I made the title proper stop after "America" and included the statement of responsibility. Although I went ahead and used this, I guess I do have a nagging worry that maybe one could consider this to have a separable edition statement.

[??]: Couldn't you do this?:

245 Map of the middle British colonies in North America / by T. Pownall ...

250 First published by Mr. Lewis Evans of Philadelphia in 1755, and since corrected and improved, as also extended, with the addition of New England and bordering parts of Canada from actual surveys now lying at the Board of Trade.

500 Edition statement appears between title and statement of responsibility.

Or this:

245 Map of the middle British colonies in North America

250 First published by Mr. Lewis Evans of Philadelphia in 1755, and since corrected and improved, as also extended, with the addition of New England and bordering parts of Canada from actual surveys now lying at the Board of Trade / by T. Pownall ...

MT: Yes, that is what I meant when I said that maybe one could consider this example to have a separable edition statement (and then it wouldn't fit the rule). 5/16/13

MT: Deleted this example since it is so ambiguous and we now have an unambiguous one below. 5/17/14

A mapp of the kingdom of Ireland : newly corrected & improv'd by actual observations : divided into its provinces, counties, & baronies, and supply'd with many market towns & other places of note omitted in former mapps ... : together with plans of the citys and fortified towns / as allso a short description of the kingdom by Henry Pratt ; to this map is added a large index of the measur'd distances of ev'ry town from Dublin, of the burroughs, barracks, and post towns with many other improuements and emendations.

A chart of the coast of America : from New York and Philadelphia to the Strait or Gulf of Florida, and from thence to the Mississippi, [1856]

Bib/image: http://catalog.nypl.org/record=b14915642~S1

Status:

MT: Not sure what to do with! Reads:

A new edition, corrected & improved
By J.W. Norie, hydrographer, &c. 1837
Additions 1856
Accompanied by a book of sailing directions

RB: Attempt...

245 A chart of the coast of America : from New York and Philadelphia to the Strait or Gulf of Florida, and from thence to the Mississippi.

250 A new edition / corrected & improved by J.W. Norie, hydrographer, &c. 1837 ; additions 1856 ; accompanied by a book of sailing directions.

MT: At the NYC meeting in Dec 2012, we had settled on something like this:

245 A chart of the coast of America : from New York and Philadelphia to the Strait or Gulf of Florida, and from thence to the Mississippi / by J.W. Norie, hydrographer, &c. 1837

250 A new edition, corrected & improved, Additions 1856

500 "Accompanied by a book of sailing directions".

500 On map, the hydrographer's name appears between the "edition" statement and the "additions" statement.

That is because Norie was responsible for the only two editions of the map that we could find (1837 and 1856) and the 1837 edition had also been called "A new edition ..." (possibly indicating that it was based on earlier maps that Norie had drawn that were published by Heather) so the phrase "Additions, 1856" seems to be functioning as a "statement relating to a named revision of an edition". We thought the DCRM(C) example would go under 2D1, so that section would look something like this:

2D. Statement relating to a named revision of an edition

2D1. If the material is a named revision of an edition, transcribe the statement relating to that revision as instructed in 2B.

The third edition, Reprinted with a new preface

(Comment: Statement indicates the publication is a revision of the third edition)

A new edition, corrected & improved, Additions 1856

(Comment: Statement indicates the publication is a revision of the "new edition")

Does that seem reasonable?

LSC:  Manon, isn't the way this is now treated a case of a transposed edition statement? If so, should there be some ellipses and a note to the effect that the edition statement has been transposed?  Does the question of a named revision of an edition now become pointless?  After looking at the item, I would agree with putting the "Accompanied by a sailing guide" in a note. I can live with Randy's solution, except that your research indicates that the statement of responsibility seems to relate to the work, not just the edition.

MT: Yes, this is a case of a transposition and a note to that effect would be required in the full MARC record (though no ellipses would be called for). I did provide a transposition note in the brief mock-up of the bib record above (On map, the hydrographer's name appears between the "edition" statement and the "additions" statement). I think it's cataloger's choice whether to say the hydrographer or the edition statement is the transposed element. However, for the purposes of using this example in 2D1, we would not include a transposition note. We only include such a note when we are explicitly illustrating a rule that calls for transposition notes. 2/1/8/13

MT: We already have two examples under 2D1, so I guess we can just ignore this one! 4/18/13

2E. Statements of responsibility relating to a named revision of an edition

2E1.

A map of the state of Virginia, reduced from the nine sheet map of the state in conformity to law by Herman Böye. 1828. Corrected by order of the executive by L.V. Buchholtz. 1859

Image: http://www.raremaps.com/gallery/enlarge/32012

LSC: I am not sure how this should be treated, perhaps under 2B6??  5/16/2013

Status:

MT: I don't think this example fits 2E1 - it isn't a named revision of an edition. I also don't think it fits 2B6, which is for edition statements that are grammatically inseparable parts of other areas. The example here is a separable statement. I think it would simply go under 2C1.1 but we already have plenty of examples there.  I've copied below links to LC's bib and image (which is a little easier to read than the one given in the link above). 11/11/13

Here is Yale's bib and it doesn't treat this as an edition statement: http://hdl.handle.net/10079/bibid/10444020

I found an image for the German version here: http://lhldigital.lindahall.org/cdm/ref/collection/astro_atlas/id/3179

and LC's bib for a facsimile of that version:

These sources all point to Bode being the creator, though he based his work on Flamsteed's. 6/28/14

Third edition, The second revision / with considerable additions and an appendix by George Wither

Status: used 6/28/14

MT: I just kept the DCRM(B) example here, since it didn't seem too obviously book-centric. I gave up on finding a real example for this. I think it must be one of those things that is more common to find with books. If anyone wants to substitute a made-up example, that would be fine too. 6/28/14
