MT: One question: In books cataloging we usually say "Cover title"; in serials cataloging we usually say "Title from cover". Is there an accepted convention for cartographic materials cataloging?
NK: I don't think there's an accepted convention, but the rules and examples and applications in both CM and the Map Cataloging Manual seem to use only "Cover title" in both the context of source of title and variations in title. See CM 7B3 and 7B4, and MCM Chap. 3 Notes, Source of Title Proper and Variations in Title. Having said that, I think I have used "Title from cover" on occasion, when it's the source of the title proper and it's the only title on the chief source of information. Not sure why -- maybe a subtle semantic differentiation? (9/11/11)
MT: I changed this to "Cover title" since both CM and the Map Cataloging Manual seem to use this wording. 9/1/12
MT: It occurred to me that in a record for a globe, a note such as "Cover title" might not make much sense! So, I changed the note to "Title from cover of folder designed to hold the globe in its folded state". I'm open to other wording but it did seem to call for some explanation. 4/1/13

TF: I've searched around a long time for an example to match the "Title from stand," but have found nothing (nor any title taken from the item itself). I think an example of a map on a powder horn would be good, except none that I've found has a title per se. And the one I found (take a look at the image below) has sort of a map (more a bird's-eye view) with a title; can we use this example? I'm not sure how you'd formulate the note, though ("Title from below rising sun"?). 2/26/13

MT: I'm just not sure why "Atlas ..." would be the chief title. The title proper appears to simply be "L'univers" so if we were converting the bib record to current punctuation/capitalization, wouldn't it just be: "L'univers : $b atlas classique et universel de géographie ancienne et moderne" ? 6/2/12

MT: Although this follows the same pattern as in the DCRM(B) "Cadmus" example, I have to say I've never liked the DCRM(B) example to begin with. It was a carryover from DCRB. In my own cataloging I would start the title transcription with "J. Schedler's ..." and trace the "Prize medal ..." in a 246 field.
RB: I would actually suggest deleting the example. "Prize medal ..." really does not seem like title information to me. I would transcribe that in a note (At head of title:...). 6/5/13

MT: I've been having a lot of trouble trying to find examples for this rule. DCRM(B) has 3 and, so far, we have zero. The atlas above seems to fit the bill, but the transcription is minimal (and "lugend" looks suspiciously like it should be "Jugend"). Todd, would it be possible for you to call for this from Beinecke and take a picture of it? (or at the very least confirm the transcription? I corrected the capitalization the best I could but not sure if the letters themselves are correct and what the omitted part says. 2/17/13

MT: Todd, thanks! These images don't fully resolve the transcription question though. The transcription is based on the first and last items. The first item is what gives us the bulk of the transcription. You've provided that and I think it says "Erste Schulkarte zu den vier Abschnitten des ersten Hauptstückes der Erdbeschreibung zum Gebrauche der studirenden Iugend in den K.K. Staaten". The last item is what gives us the transcription for the final designation inserted in square brackets. Could you confirm that it is spelled "zweyundvierzigste" (meaning 42nd) on the piece? I don't have an image of that last item to double check against. For now, I am entering this as our example (omitting words in the middle that change depending on the map - they seem to refer to particular sections of what must be accompanying text): "Erste[-zweyundvierzigste] Schulkarte zu ... der Erdbeschreibung zum Gebrauche der studirenden Iugend in den K.K. Staaten" 2/18/13

MT: Hooray! And the transcription is correct. I think just having one example for this rule should be enough, given how hard it has been to find one, so I'm deleting the other two placeholder examples and we can consider this one done. The one quibble someone might make is the use of the mark of omission before the fifth word, but in this case I think it makes sense because the omitted text is really "part-specific" and not appropriate for the title of the whole resource. You could always give an added entry for the exact title of each map if you really wanted to do that. 2/20/13

LSC: When I parsed this and turned it into English, it turns out to be something like:

which is rather like the example given below. The subject is G. Adams, the verb is in the abbreviation "D.D.Q.," which works out to "dedicat quod," which he dedicates. Manon is correct that most of this is accusative, "G. Adams dedicates this terrestrial globe ..." with the dedication in the dative (Britanniarum Regi augustissimo Georgio Tertio scientiarum cultori pariter et praesidio). I hope this helps. I had a difficult time finding out DDQ and finally found it in a database of Latin inscriptions. 7/10/13

MT: Yes, that was my thinking. The example is only supposed to illustrate the rule and the rule says nothing about making a note, though I think most catalogers would include such a note if they knew the bibliographic history. It would certainly be permitted under 7B7.2. We could add this as an example of a note under 7B7.2 but the note would need to be revised slightly so that the previous publication was cited following the format given in 7A5. Ideally there'd even be a reference work cited, but I don't have that information. I can only find a bib record for "The small East India pilot" in the Dartmouth catalog and it is pretty bare bones. There is an established heading for Laurie and Whittle as a corporate body, though the Dartmouth record doesn't use it. I can't find any bib records for "The new East India pilot".
