MT: Done. 1/20/14

TF: How many more examples do we need for this rule? I think the four we have amply illustrates the rule. 1/20/12

MT: I think it isn't so much the number of examples as the different types of examples that is important, but I think you're right, Todd, what we have is probably sufficient. I'll delete the two marked "C example needed". 2/17/13. Follow up: I found a new example similar to DCRM(B)'s "Bell's edition of Shakspere" and added it above. 2/17/13

1B2.2 Transposed elements

Atlas of award : twenty-five sectional maps and index map showing the line fixed by the Tribunal / Alaskan Boundary Tribunal

Note: "Alaskan Boundary Tribunal" precedes title on t.p.

Image: http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/9v4r08

Status: Used 9/8/12

MT: Same example as used for 1E3.1. It would be nice to have a different one but this will work if we can't find another one. 9/8/12

Hannibal's march through the Alps / Spenser Wilkinson

Optional note: Wilkinson's name precedes title on map

Image: http://blogs.loc.gov/maps/files/2015/11/hannibal.jpg

Status:

MT: Not an atlas, so it wouldn't be a good substitute, but adding this example here in case we ever need it since they can be so hard to find. 11/29/15

Middle Earth : being a map purporting to trace the divers routes taken by the companions of the ring during their heroic and historical journeys through Middle Earth

Optional note: On map, "Middle Earth" appears at bottom of sheet; the other title information appears at top

Status: Used 3/29/14

MT: no online image but transcription verified based on an illustration in a book

(location that serves as title proper on recto of sheet)

Note: Title from upper left corner

Bib: http://hollis.harvard.edu/?itemid=|library/m/aleph|008843353

Image

Status: Used 2/17/13
MT: Bib record link to Harvard's catalog wasn't working so I added a permanent link from the new version of Hollis. Also, I changed the label from "Note" to "Optional note" and corrected "Britania" to "Britannia". The image is so small that I can't really tell if the upper case "V" letters converted to "u" have been transcribed correctly following the pattern of the printer. Can anyone else make it out or find a better image? 2/17/13

1B3.2. (note on title proper for globes and other realia)

Townsend's patent folding globe.

Note: Title from cover.

Image: http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~1006~80028?qvq=q:Pub_Type=%22Globe%22+OR+%22Globe+gores%22+;sort:Pub_Date,Pub_List_No_InitialSort;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=37&trs=59

Status: Used 8/22/11

MT: One question: In books cataloging we usually say "Cover title"; in serials cataloging we usually say "Title from cover". Is there an accepted convention for cartographic materials cataloging?

NK: I don't think there's an accepted convention, but the rules and examples and applications in both CM and the Map Cataloging Manual seem to use only "Cover title" in both the context of source of title and variations in title. See CM 7B3 and 7B4, and MCM Chap. 3 Notes, Source of Title Proper and Variations in Title. Having said that, I think I have used "Title from cover" on occasion, when it's the source of the title proper and it's the only title on the chief source of information. Not sure why -- maybe a subtle semantic differentiation?  (9/11/11)

MT: I changed this to "Cover title" since both CM and the Map Cataloging Manual seem to use this wording. 9/1/12
MT: It occurred to me that in a record for a globe, a note such as "Cover title" might not make much sense! So, I changed the note to "Title from cover of folder designed to hold the globe in its folded state". I'm open to other wording but it did seem to call for some explanation. 4/1/13

Atlas geographique.

Note: Title from container.

Image: http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/detail/RUMSEY~8~1~1236~110061?qvq=q:puzzle;sort:Pub_List_No_InitialSort,Pub_Date,Pub_List_No,Series_No;lc:RUMSEY~8~1&mi=13&trs=20#

Comment: Would others consider the box a container? I tried to find realia.

Status:

TF: I would say the box is a container.

MT: We already have one example of a title taken something from other than the item itself (the folding globe example, above). What we are missing is an example illustrating the 2nd sentence (i.e. an example of a situation where the title of a globe or realia IS taken from the item itself and we're providing an optional note specifying where exactly). 6/2/12

TF: I've searched around a long time for an example to match the "Title from stand," but have found nothing (nor any title taken from the item itself). I think an example of a map on a powder horn would be good, except none that I've found has a title per se. And the one I found (take a look at the image below) has sort of a map (more a bird's-eye view) with a title; can we use this example? I'm not sure how you'd formulate the note, though ("Title from below rising sun"?). 2/26/13

Image (powder horn)

MT: I appreciate the work you've done to try to find something we can use, Todd. But, I agree, "Title from below rising sun" might be a little strange. I've put a couple of possible ideas below. Do either (or both) of these appeal to anyone? 4/1/13

TF: If I had to choose one, I'd choose the first example (Rand McNally globe).
MT: Thanks, I used that one. 4/21/13

Rand McNally indexed terrestrial art globe

1B3.4. (Note on the source of the title proper for map series/sets)

Carte générale de la France par départements.

Note: Title from index map.

Bib

Image (whole index sheet)

Image (title)

Status: Used 5/19/13

TF: This is a preliminary record; FYI.

MT: Is "index sheet" the same thing as an "index map" (CM glossary term) and if so should we use the latter? That is also the term LC uses: http://lccn.loc.gov/73695368

Also, are we sure this is a map series/set? P3.2.1 describes "Contiguous-area map series" as usually relatively large cartographic works, sometimes involving as many as 60,000 sheets" and this example has only 24 maps, so I wanted to make sure. If we use it, the title proper should be: Carte générale de la France par départements.  5/16/13

TF: Yes, index sheet is an index map; I changed the phrasing in the note (and the record). I was thinking this is more a set than a series. The rule applies to series/sets. 5/17/13

MT: Thanks!

1B4.1 (Title proper inclusive of other titles or other title information appearing before the chief title)

L'univers, Atlas classique et universal de geographie ancienne et moderne

(Comment: Atlas classique et universal de geographie ancienne et moderne is the chief title)

Bib. record: http://neworbexpress.library.yale.edu/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=3428076

Image: http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/xa2w77

Status:

MT: Not sure if this is an appropriate example for this rule; others?

NK: I think it's an appropriate example, and would probably be hard put to find another example as good. (9/11/11)

MT: I'm just not sure why "Atlas ..." would be the chief title. The bib record has "Atlas ..." coded as $b, so the situation doesn't seem to qualify as "a title proper inclusive of other titles or other title information appearing before the chief title". The title proper appears to simply be "L'univers" so if we were converting the bib record to current punctuation/capitalization, wouldn't it just be: "L'univers : $b atlas classique et universel de géographie ancienne et moderne" ? 6/2/12

TF: I'm not sure this would be an appropriate example of the rule, either, but it's been very difficult to find a proper one. Let me keep looking.

Epitome of Ortelius, his Theater of the vvorld

Bib

Image

Status: Used 2/20/13

TF: I'm not sure this is a good example. Others? 1/20/13

MT: I guess I don't see how this example illustrates the rule. 2/18/13

TF: I thought perhaps "Theater of the world" could be considered the main title (even though the Epitome part is larger font) as it's an abridgement of Theatrum orbis terrarum. This is a very difficult rule to find an example for. 2/19/13

MT: I guess I can see it that way. It is a difficult rule to find examples for, you're right. I keep thinking it would be nice to find something where the introductory title is in a different language, like the "Seculum Davidicum redivivum" example in DCRM(B), but that might be asking for too much. I'll use this for now. If anyone has opinions as to whether this does or doesn't work, please speak up. I corrected the example by making it begin "An epitome ...", changing "Theater" to "Theatre", and adding a comment. 2/20/13

MT: Compare the capitalization of this example with the other Ortelius example in 1B2.1. Does one need to be changed? 12/13/13

TF: See my comment for 1B2.1. I would keep the capitalization as is in 1B4.1. 12/15/13

MT: Done. 1/20/14

Prize medal Paris Exposn. 1867. J. Schedler's terrestrial globe

(Comment: “J. Schedler's terrestrial globe” is clearly more prominent than “Prize medal …”)

Bib/Image: http://libweb5.princeton.edu/visual_materials/maps/globes-objects/globe8.html
Status: Used 8/18/12

MT: Although this follows the same pattern as in the DCRM(B) "Cadmus" example, I have to say I've never liked the DCRM(B) example to begin with. It was a carryover from DCRB. In my own cataloging I would start the title transcription with "J. Schedler's ..." and trace the "Prize medal ..." in a 246 field.

RB: I would actually suggest deleting the example. "Prize medal ..." really does not seem like title information to me. I would transcribe that in a note (At head of title:...). 6/5/13

MT: Deleted (per decision at ALA Annual 2013). At the public hearing, DJL agreed that she would not include this information as part of the title proper. 7/1/13

Woodbridge's larger atlas, Atlas on a new plan exhibiting the prevailing religions, forms of government, degrees of civilization ...

(Comment: Atlas on a new plan exhibiting ... is the chief title)

Bib. record: [none found]

Image

Status: Used 8/18/12 but changed punctuation to: Woodbridge's larger atlas. Atlas on a new plan : exhibiting the prevailing religions, forms of government, degrees of civilization ...

RB: Why is there a period after "Woodbridge's larger atlas"? Does ISBD allow for that punctuation? 6/5/13

MT: Kept for now, as this follow's the model in DCRM(B). The punctuation is not an ISBD requirement; I don't think ISBD addresses this sort of situation. I take it to be cataloger's judgment. But rule 1.B2.1 is being looked at agin, so maybe this will example will change. 7/1/13

MT: Deleted example, because rule itself changed to exclude grammatically separable info preceding the chief title. 3/29/14

Mitchell's new school atlas. Mitchell's Modern atlas : a series of forty-four copperplate maps ...

(Comment: "Mitchell's Modern atlas" is the chief title)

Status:
MT: Very similar to the Woodbridge example above. Not sure we need it but I thought I'd add it here just in case, since we had some trouble finding examples. If we decide we don't like one of the first two, this one could substitute. 2/25/13

MT: No longer relevant; see explanation in preceding example. 3/29/14

1B4.4. (Title proper inclusive of a caption)

Description, situation & vue de la ville de Mexique ...

Bib. record: http://neworbexpress.library.yale.edu/vwebv/holdingsInfo?bibId=8426257

Image

Status:

TF: We might be able to find a better example than this one. I'll keep looking.

MT: This is an example of a caption title (rather than a title proper that includes a caption), isn't it? 9/1/12

TF: Yes it is, actually. I'm not sure I understand what a title proper that includes a caption is. I can't get a sense from the example in DCRM(B).

Compliments of Utica Daily Press. Map of Cuba

Image: http://www.davidrumsey.com/luna/servlet/s/d7po72

Status: Used 2/18/13; Deleted 3/30/14

MT: I'm not sure this is a good example or a preferred transcription. As I've done it above, I treated "Compliments of Utica Daily Press" as a caption. Rumsey has "Compliments of Utica Daily Press Map of Cuba" (no punctuation), which made no sense to me. Someone might also conceivably do this as "Utica Daily Press map of Cuba" with a note "The words 'Compliments of' precede the title". 9/1/12

TF: I would say this is a good example (at least until someone finds a better one).

MT: Okay, I used it. I didn't see the point of showing both the "source" and "transcription" so I just gave the transcription. Honestly, I'm not really sure of the difference between this example (inclusive of caption) and the "Prize medal Paris Exposn. 1867. J. Schedler's terrestrial globe" example in 1B4.1 (inclusive of other title information appearing before chief title). 2/18/13

MT: Deleted example because deleted rule. Grammatically separable information is no longer to be part of the title proper. 3/30/14

To His Most Sacred Majesty George the Third, this new celestial globe containing all [the] southern constellations lately observed at the Cape of Good Hope and all the stars in Flamsted's British catalogue is most humbly inscribed by His Majesty's most dutifull and oblidged subject and servant, G. Adams ...

No bib record

Image

Status:

TF: This globe has no record in Orbis; I can catalog it if necessary. Unfortunately, you cannot see the title from the image; I'll check to make sure this is what is actually on the globe. 1/20/12 Checked; 4/3/13

MT: That would be great, Todd! Especially make sure the "ye" shouldn't be "[the]" according to Appendix G.3. 2/17/13

MT: Looks like Todd corrected the transcription to make "ye" read "[the]". Now my question for everyone is: Does the phrase "by His Majesty's ... G. Adams" belong in the title proper or the statement of responsibility? In the first example in this rule (West Indies), the "by" statement was not included in the title proper; similarly, in 1B2.1 (Shelbourne example) it was omitted. 9/21/13

1B5. Title proper with grammatically inseparable designation

Erste[-zweyundvierzigste] Schulkarte ... zum Gebrauche der studirenden Lugend in den K.K. Staaten

Bib: http://hdl.handle.net/10079/bibid/3408077

Image (first map)

Image (second map)

Image (final map)

Status: Used 2/18/13

MT: I've been having a lot of trouble trying to find examples for this rule. DCRM(B) has 3 and, so far, we have zero. The atlas above seems to fit the bill, but the transcription is minimal (and "lugend" looks suspiciously like it should be "Jugend"). Todd, would it be possible for you to call for this from Beinecke and take a picture of it? (or at the very least confirm the transcription? I corrected the capitalization the best I could but not sure if the letters themselves are correct and what the omitted part says. 2/17/13

TF: I'll do this as soon as possible and post the image. 2/17/12

MT: Todd, thanks! These images don't fully resolve the transcription question though. The transcription is based on the first and last items. The first item is what gives us the bulk of the transcription. You've provided that and I think it says "Erste Schulkarte zu den vier Abschnitten des ersten Hauptstückes der Erdbeschreibung zum Gebrauche der studirenden Iugend in den K.K. Staaten". The last item is what gives us the transcription for the final designation inserted in square brackets. Could you confirm that it is spelled "zweyundvierzigste" (meaning 42nd) on the piece? I don't have an image of that last item to double check against. For now, I am entering this as our example (omitting words in the middle that change depending on the map - they seem to refer to particular sections of what must be accompanying text): "Erste[-zweyundvierzigste] Schulkarte zu ... der Erdbeschreibung zum Gebrauche der studirenden Iugend in den K.K. Staaten" 2/18/13

TF: An image of the last map with the final designation has now been linked above. 2/20/13
MT: Hooray! And the transcription is correct. I think just having one example for this rule should be enough, given how hard it has been to find one, so I'm deleting the other two placeholder examples and we can consider this one done. The one quibble someone might make is the use of the mark of omission before the fifth word, but in this case I think it makes sense because the omitted text is really "part-specific" and not appropriate for the title of the whole resource. You could always give an added entry for the exact title of each map if you really wanted to do that. 2/20/13

1B6 (No title proper)

MT: Other possibilities, Todd: You could ask to see the map and either 1) make a note recording the information exactly as it appears or 2) take a picture (assuming you have a digital camera of some sort) and upload it on the wiki or a site such as flickr. This applies for other examples in the YUL Map Dept. or in BRBL (for which we don't have an image) as well. Just a thought. 9/10/12

TF: Above are images of the cover, the accompanying text, and the map itself. I haven't changed anything in the bib record.
MT: This is an interesting example (and the map image shows that it does involve transposition after all). How would others do the transcription? I think I see 5 options:

Option #1: This is how Cambridge U does it (which preserves the order on the piece but does not put the section number/title in the title proper, contradicting the rule at hand):

245 The circuiteer : $b a series of distance maps for all the principal towns in the United Kingdom / $c invented by J. Friederichs to serve as a guide for ascertaining cab fares, porterage, &c &c. ; with explanations in English, French & German ; no. 1, London.

Option #2: This is how Yale does it (which somewhat stretches the notion of title proper but is not wrong):

245 The circuiteer, a series of distance maps for all the principal towns in the United Kingdom, with explanations in English, French & German. $n No. 1, $p London / $c invented by J. Friederichs to serve as a guide for ascertaining cab fares, porterage, &c &c.

500 On map, the words "with explanations in English, French & German, No. 1, London" appear after the statement of responsibility.

Option #3: This treats the phrases that seem like "other title info" as such, but grammatically sounds odd because the phrase "a series of ..." pertains to "circuiteer" not "London"):

245 The circuiteer. $n No. 1, $p London : $b a series of distance maps for all the principal towns in the United Kingdom / $c invented by J. Friederichs to serve as a guide for ascertaining cab fares, porterage, &c &c. ; with explanations in English, French & German.

500 On map, "No. 1, London" directly follows the phrase "with explanations in English, French & German".

Option #4: This is a combination of #2 and #3 above:

245 The circuiteer, a series of distance maps for all the principal towns in the United Kingdom. $n No. 1, $p London / $c invented by J. Friederichs to serve as a guide for ascertaining cab fares, porterage, &c &c. ; with explanations in English, French & German.

500 On map, "No. 1, London" directly follows the phrase "with explanations in English, French & German".

Option #5: This treats "London" (by itself) as the title proper and the remaining words as the series statement:

245 London.

490 The circuiteer : a series of distance maps for all the principal towns in the United Kingdom / invented by J. Friedrichs to serve as a guide for ascertaining cab fares, porterage, &. &. ; with explanations in English, French & German ; $v no. 1

500 On map, the series statement precedes the title.

The answer will determine what our example looks like and where it goes in the rules (area 1 vs. area 6). 10/28/12. No one has an opinion on this one? 2/20/13

TF: I would argue for option #4. It's an example of transposing grammatically separable parts. (And we're not going to find another example that fits this part of the rule.) 2/23/13

MT: Well, no one else has weighed in with an opinion, so I've followed Todd's recommendation. 3/27/13

MT: The only thing that gives me pause is that "A map of Pennsylvania & parts connected therewith ..." could be considered the chief title and 1B8.3 says "Extend the transcription of the title proper at least through the end of the chief title of the resource." But, I found another example, below, that I think should work. 3/27/13

Image

Status:

MT: I think the chief title is "Liber geographiae" in this case and the title proper would end after "geographiae". I'm a little suspicious of the transcription because the bib record is not dcrb or dcrmb and it's a recon record. The title in the image is all caps, so I'm wondering if there is other text in the item that would need to be consulted to identify the pattern of the printer for i/j/u/v purposes. Also, the DCRM(B) example actually has more than 5 words preceding the chief title, so it's more likely that someone might be tempted to omit some of them. Only 3 words precede the title proper in this example, so it seems more like the examples in 1B2.1. 3/27/13

MT: I think we don't need the example now that we have others. 2/23/14

MT: I took this picture while I was on vacation in Amsterdam figuring it might make a good example, but my Latin just isn't good enough to be sure what exactly rule it is illustrating! Larry, can you help? I'm not at all confident that the way I've presented it here is correct. I think I know that these words (or most of them?) are in the accusative but I can't actually figure out what the subject and the verb are when I look at the entire dedicatory title (and thus what I can omit and not omit in the example). 7/7/13

LSC: When I parsed this and turned it into English, it turns out to be something like:

D. Adams, utterly overcome by reverence and duty dedicates this monument of a grateful mind and piety this terrestrial globe showing all the regions of the earth heretofore explored according to the observations of sailing travelers and the most recent descriptions of astronomers to the most honorable king of Great Britain George the Third, equally the supporter of the cultivators of the sciences

which is rather like the example given below.  The subject is G. Adams, the verb is in the abbreviation "D.D.Q.," which works out to "dedicat quod,"  which he dedicates.  Manon is correct that most of this is accusative, "G. Adams dedicates this terrestrial globe ..." with the dedication in the dative (Britanniarum Regi augustissimo Georgio Tertio scientiarum cultori pariter et praesidio). I hope this helps.  I had a difficult time finding out DDQ and finally found it in a database of Latin inscriptions. 7/10/13
MT: Okay, so sounds like I shouldn't omit "D.D.Q." or "G. Adams" because they are grammatically inseparable (being the verb and subject) but the words between the chief title and the verb could be omitted (not that I would so that if I were cataloging, but it would be acceptable). I've made these changes and added the example. Let me know if I've misinterpreted your answer, Larry. 2/23/14

Atlas of the United States [cartographic material (tactile)] : printed for the use of the blind ...

I think you're right that this is "tactile" not braille. Braille seems to be a specific type of tactile printing that uses raised dots. This particular book uses something called "Boston line letter":

Source: CM 1D3 (but the text of the comment has been tweaked; is it okay?)
Status: Used 7/20/11

NK: Did you purposely tweak it so that there's just a "Comment" and not a "Note"? Is that because there's nothing in the rule calling for a note in this situation? I kind of like the note, but if you figure that the possibility of that kind of note is covered ok in Area 7, then I'm ok with the change. (9/11/11)

MT: Yes, that was my thinking. The example is only supposed to illustrate the rule and the rule says nothing about making a note, though I think most catalogers would include such a note if they knew the bibliographic history. It would certainly be permitted under 7B7.2. We could add this as an example of a note under 7B7.2 but the note would need to be revised slightly so that the previous publication was cited following the format given in 7A5. Ideally there'd even be a reference work cited, but I don't have that information. I can only find a bib record for "The small East India pilot" in the Dartmouth catalog and it is pretty bare bones. There is an established heading for Laurie and Whittle as a corporate body, though the Dartmouth record doesn't use it. I can't find any bib records for "The new East India pilot". Anyway, I think the note would go something like this if you all think we should add it to 7B7.2:  Originally published as: Robert Laurie and James Whittle. The small East India pilot. London, 1796

Status:
MT: I don't think I'd call "with three maps ..." a phrase about "notes, appendices, etc.". Not so much because of the maps' physical placement, more because they strike me as part of the main content of the atlas. 9/16/12

MT: This is the same type of example as the "Map of Chili" one above. What we need still is an example to replace the "Les Akancas" example in the text (i.e. an example that contains two titles by the same person linked by a connecting word or phrase); in the "Les Akancas" example, that connecting word is "suivi"

NK: I like this example because it has and shows the s.o.r., too, even tho the rule is concerned with the titles. But I'll look for another with a connecting phrase. (9/11/11)
